Janma Kundali

About the Kundali

What is a Janma Kundali?

A Janma Kundali (birth chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. It shows the Lagna (the sign rising in the east), the twelve bhavas (houses) and the positions of the nine grahas in the twelve rashis and twenty-seven nakshatras.

Jyotish reads this map to understand temperament, strengths and challenges, and uses the Vimshottari dasha system to time the main periods of life.

How Grahavani calculates it

Your birth time is converted to Universal Time using the time zone history of your birth place. The positions of the Sun, Moon and planets are then computed from orbital mathematics and converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard used by the Government of India's calendar.

The Lagna is solved from local sidereal time and your latitude. Yogas, doshas and strengths are then checked with stated classical rules, so you can see why each result appears.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Kundali and how this site works.

What is a Kundali?
A Kundali, or Janma Kundali, is a Vedic birth chart: the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, Rahu and Ketu at the moment of your birth, arranged in twelve houses from the Lagna (ascendant). It is the basis of all Jyotish readings.
What details do I need to make my Kundali?
Your date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth. The place gives latitude, longitude and time zone, which are needed to calculate the Lagna and houses correctly.
What if I don't know my exact birth time?
Planet signs and most nakshatras will still be correct, because they change slowly. The Lagna changes about every two hours and the Lagna degree about every four minutes, so house positions and dasha dates depend on an accurate time.
How accurate is this Kundali?
Planet positions are calculated with astronomical formulas and were tested against the Swiss Ephemeris for 1900 to 2100. The Moon and Lagna agree within about one arc-minute, and the other planets within about three and a half arc-minutes.
Which ayanamsa does Grahavani use?
It uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard adopted by the Indian Calendar Reform Committee and used by most Indian astrologers and panchangs.
What is Mangal dosha (Manglik)?
Mangal dosha is present when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Grahavani checks it from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus. Many traditions also apply cancellation rules, so discuss important decisions with an astrologer.
What is Vimshottari dasha?
Vimshottari is a 120-year cycle of planetary periods. Your starting period depends on the nakshatra of the Moon at birth. Each mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas, and Grahavani lists the dates for 100 years.
Why do I need to log in, and is my data private?
