On this night Shiva and Parvati were married.

A hunter, sitting in a bilva tree all night, unknowingly dropped leaves and water on a Shivalinga and was freed of his sins.

So a night of wakeful worship on Shivaratri is said to bring great merit.

A simple home puja. Follow your family tradition and priest where they differ.
